The terms “skincare trend” and “science-backed” aren't always synonymous. In fact, at the risk of sounding like a real killjoy, what’s hot on the skincare scene is more often the product of a lot of hype than hard-hitting research.

One notable exception? LED masks. The category is a social media darling…and one with proven research backing the benefits.

The basic premise: Different wavelengths of visible light (all those different colors) have unique skin benefits. For example, red light has been shown to boost collagen production and reduce inflammation. Blue light is beloved for helping to kill acne-causing bacteria. And green light can target hyperpigmentation and pesky dark spots.

So, it makes sense that would be, oh, about 700 bajillion LED face masks on the market right now. But one recent launch, the Shark Beauty CryoGlow LED Face Mask, is really making headlines, offering some unique features that set it apart from the competition.

That's why we had to get our hands on one and put it to the test. Enter our intrepid Executive Editor, Abigail Cuffey, who was game to give it a go. TL;DR: She's hooked.

What makes the Shark Beauty CryoGlow LED Face Mask different?

Along with offering both red and blue light, the Shark mask also touts infrared LEDs. (Research shows that infrared light can help improve skin texture and tone.) The mask has three preset treatment protocols—Better Aging, Skin Clearing, and Skin Sustaining—each of which offers a unique combination of those three LED options during a six-, eight-, or four-minute cycle, respectively. There’s also patented LED technology to ensure the light is delivered evenly to the skin, without any gaps in coverage (the interlocking bulbs provide maximum coverage).

But perhaps most noteworthy is the addition of under-eye cooling pads, which can be used for five to 15 minutes at three different chilly temps to help soothe and de-puff.

Spoiler alert: This was one of our tester's favorite features.

How our editor used the Shark Beauty LED Face Mask.

Cuffey used the mask as part of her regular skincare routine, completing 30 sessions during the 8-week testing period. She utilized the ‘Better Aging’ protocol (which pairs the red and infrared lights) for each session.

Women’s Health Executive Editor Abigail Cuffey completed 30 treatments with her Shark CryoGlow over an 8-week testing period.

Our editor’s takeaway after using the Shark Beauty LED Face Mask

Even though Cuffey was admittedly a bit nervous that the slightly larger mask would make it hard to multitask, she found the fit comfortable. It is on the heavier side, however, which is why she kept activity to a minimum while wearing it. (Although she did note that the included remote can easily be stashed in your pocket should you want to move around more.)

As a busy mom, Cuffey loved working the mask into her P.M. routine as a little moment of self-care, particularly given the quickie six-minute cycle of her chosen treatment protocol. “It’s too short to do chores, a definite plus! You have no choice but to chill for a few. I loved using it at night. It gave me a self-care moment before crashing into bed,” she says.

As far as results go, Cuffey was super impressed: “My skin felt clearer and more even. I usually breakout a bit when PMS-ing, but with this mask regimen, my skin stayed so clear that I forgot where I was in my cycle. And that was even though I did the ‘Better Aging’ setting and not the clear skin one,” she says.

The undereye pads were also a huge hit; Cuffey raved about the cooling sensation, adding that she utilized the coolest temperature setting every time.

The easy-to-use dial helps you toggle back and forth through the pre-set treatment options and track your progress.

The bottom line: Is the Shark LED Face Mask worth it?

At $350, this certainly isn’t cheap, but keep in mind that many other comparable LED masks come with a similar price tag. You also do get the addition of the cooling undereye pads, a noteworthy feature that others don’t offer. It's no wonder this product was recently named "Best Tool" in the 2025 Women's Health Beauty Awards.

For Cuffey, the ease of use coupled with visible results have made it a new staple in her skincare line-up. “I went a few days without the mask while traveling and my skin was craving it. I plan to continue with it!”
